Mesa puts public money behind Cannon Beach

Mesa is backing Cannon Beach, the hotel-and-surf development tied to Revel Surf on Power Road, with a sales tax reimbursement, the Mesa Tribune reported Sunday.

Key facts

  • Where: the Power Road corridor, alongside Revel Surf Park at 4503 S Power Rd.
  • What's attached: a Tapestry by Hilton hotel, on the same site as the surf side.
  • The mechanism: a sales tax reimbursement. The city hands back a share of the sales tax the project generates instead of writing a check up front, so the payout depends on the place actually drawing people.
  • Why it matters here: Power Road between the 60 and the 202 is the retail spine for Augusta Ranch, Superstition Springs, and the Sunland communities. A resort anchor changes what fills in the pads around it.

Revel Surf is already open and programming weekends, and the reimbursement pays out only against sales the site generates. The Tapestry by Hilton hotel shares the Cannon Beach site with the surf park.

What to watch: the reimbursement terms, which the Tribune lays out in full. Details.

Around East Mesa

🦞 Krazy Cajun Seafood and Hibachi is coming to Superstition Springs Center. It will be the concept's third Arizona location, landing at the mall off the 60 at Power. Superstition Springs has spent the last few years trading anchor space for food and entertainment tenants, and this is another one of those swaps. Details.

📖 The city is recruiting tutors age 50 and older. AARP Foundation Experience Corps Mesa places volunteers in kindergarten through fourth-grade classrooms to help kids become confident readers. For the Sunland Springs, Sunland Village East, and Apache Wells crowd, it is one of the few volunteer asks that puts you inside a neighborhood school rather than behind a folding table. Details.

🏠 Mesa's median sale price is $452,500, down 1% from a year ago.

❤️ The CPR and AED class at Red Mountain Library moved. Mesa Fire and Medical's LifeSaver session is now September 5, not this Saturday. Details.

🏗️ Eastmark corridor and dev watch

What's getting built along Ellsworth, Signal Butte, and the East Mesa industrial corridor.

🍕 Oregano's Pizza Bistro wants 3506 S Signal Butte Road. Oregano's AZ LLC filed for a new Series 12 Restaurant License, the permit a sit-down restaurant needs to serve alcohol with meals. There is no existing license at the address, so this is a new building rather than a tenant swap. The application is on the City Council agenda for August 31. Details.

🏢 261 apartments are queued at Signal Butte and Rubidium. "Homestead at Eastmark" covers 11.7 acres at the southwest corner, with the apartment blocks plus 2.2 acres of retail and commercial pads. City staff recommended approval with conditions when the site plan went to the Planning and Zoning Board on June 24. Signal Butte is quietly doing more work this cycle than Ellsworth is. Details.
